Bernard Lagat had some unexpected company when Dutchman Arnoud Okken kicked by him at the bell of the 1000m at the BW Bank Meeting in Karlsruhe, Germany.
Lagat was forced wide around the final bend, but held on and took the 2:18.12 victory. In his first race over the distance, Lagat fell 0.26 seconds shy of David Krummenacker’s 2:17.86 U.S. record from 2002.
In other meet action: Isaac Songok Kiprono won the battle of the Songoks with his size-able 7:39.32 win over Boniface in the 3,000m. It was Isaac’s second career indoor win in as many races. European indoor 3000m champion Lidija Chojecka controlled the women’s 1500 from the outset, and finally sealed the win with 150m to go en route to a 4:05.44 world leader.
Sonja Roman finished second after running down Maryem Alaoui Selsouli down the homestretch to reach the line in 4:08.61, her second 1500m PB of the season and third overall. Not satisfied with the pace, Jolanda Ceplak jumped to the lead a step or two before reaching the 400m mark and finished unpressed in 1:58.99, her fourth straigh sub-2:00 of the year, and the season’s second fastest time.
