austin-marathon.jpgJynocel Basweti of Kenya and Moges Zebenaye of Ethiopia won today’s AT&T Austin Marathon held on a new loop course which proved much more challenging than the previous point-to-point downhill course.

Basweti, 20, ran away from the field to set a personal best 2:14:01 (unofficial). Running under sunny skies accompanied by cold temperatures it looked like he was going to run closer to 2:12, but he slowed a bit in the final miles.

“I came for 2:11 but there were some hills,” Basweti told the FOX 7 television station in Austin which broadcast the race over the Internet.

Zebenaye also won easily in 2:39:45. It was the slowest women’s winning time at Austin since 1997.

No other results were immediately available. Basweti earned $8000 for the win, including a $1000 bonus for breaking 2:15. Zebenaye earned $7000.
