Craig Mottram and Meseret Defar lived up the the hype and expectations; winning their respective 3,000m races at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games.
Reebok’s marketing of the Craig vs. Craig match-up in the men’s 3,000m ended up being a lot of smoke, but very little fire with Alistair Craig unable to keep up after about 2100 meters. Australia’s Craig Mottram performed masterfully;, winning in a time of 7:39.24 and running the last 400 meters in a blistering 54.98. Alistair Cragg finished a disappointing fourth (7:52.68). Markos Geneti (7:42.72) and Ali Abdosh (7:45.96) of Ethiopia came in second and third.
Ethiopian Meseret Defar, one of the world’s top runners, won the women’s 3000m in 8:30.31. Defar beat out local Boston favorite, Shalane Flanagan (8:33.25) who was returning to competition. However, Flanagan was able to set a new American record; breaking the record held by Regina Jacobs (8:39.14 in Japan in 1999).
