Ryan Hall, the former Stanford runner who just set the U.S. record for the half marathon (00:59:43), announced on Monday that plans to compete in the February 10th USA cross Country Championships in Boulder, Colorado. Olympic medalists Meb Keflezighi and Deena Kastor has also confirmed their registration in the highly anticipated championships.
Held in Boulder for the first time, the 2007 XC Championships will take place at the Flatirons Golf Course and have a slightly different format. In the past it featured a 4k, but this year there will be just one 12k race. The best of the U.S. middle- and long-distance runners will compete for the national title and a spot on the U.S. team that will go on to compete in the IAAF World Cross Country Championships, scheduled for March 24 in Kenya.
Despite the stiff competition, Hall’s record-setting performance at the Aramco Half-Marathon and his win at last year’s 12k XC championships race will make him the favorite at this year’s event. Hall will once again be gunning for victory:
“That’s the plan. It would be great to do that.”
Future plans for Hall include running a spring marathon in hopes of getting a qualifying time for the November 3rd U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials. Boulder’s Ritzenhein, Hall’s rival, also plans to race in the marathon trials, which will be held on a five-loop course in Manhattan the day before the ING NYC Marathon.
