There was an unexpected win on Sunday at Jacksonville’s no-frill marathon. Kim Pawelek, a 2008 Olympic Trials qualifier wasn’t planning on actually finishing the race; intending for it to be a mere training run.
She had planned to call it quits after 20 miles and just have a fun LSD (long, slow distance). She didn’t even wear here racing shoes. However, around mile marker 18, Pawelek realized that she was the leader.
“At 181/2, I think, maybe I can do this, I get to 19, I think, all right, I’ll probably do this. I get to 191/2 and I’m thinking, I’m stopping at 20.’In the span of one mile, I was going back and forth.”
Pawelek decided to stay in the race and finished with a time of 2:56:04; 20 minutes shy of her personal best. This is the second time she has stayed in the race (after planning to just run a piece of it) and gone on to win. In 2003, she was only planning to run the half marathon, but stayed in after again being told she was ahead of the pack.
The only other female to cross the finish line under 3 hours was Michelle Kelley, 36, of Moab, Utah, who completed her marathon in 2:57:40.
Completing his first marathon since 1999, Jonathan Kraas, 31 from Charleston, SC completed the marathon in 2:30:06 for the victory. He was challenged throughout the race by Mike Aldrink of Raleigh, NC who began cramping around mile 20. He ultimately crossed the finish line in 2:33:54 as the runner-up.
The 2006 Jacksonville Marathon feature it’s largest marathon and half-marathon field in the race’s history.
