Registered Dietitian vs. Nutritionist

As athletes, more specifically competitive athletes, knowing the difference between a registered dietitian and a nutritionist may be a major concern when seeking nutritional advice.

When going to see a healthcare provider I am sure it is your hope that whatever professional you may be seeing for any reason is fully educated and trained in their field, and has the knowledge to answer your questions accurately.

The American Dietetics Association defines a Registered Dietitian (RD) as “a food and nutrition expert who has met the minimum academic and professional requirements to qualify for the credential “RD.”

So, if dietitians are the “food and nutrition experts” what exactly is a nutritionist, and what requirements do they fulfill? There is no legal definition for the term nutritionist, so anyone can call himself or herself by that title. A nutritionist however, is commonly defined as a person who advises people on dietary matters relating to health, wellbeing and optimal nutrition. “Self-identified” nutritionists may have varying levels of education, and can be someone with little education up to someone who may have the equivalent of a master’s degree in Physiology or Biology. Needless to say, these individuals have not received the same specialized, formally accredited tertiary education and training as a registered dietitian.

Some RD’s may refer to themselves as “nutritionists” because the public is likely to understand and recognize the term, but the credential to look for is the RD.

Do your research next time you are seeking nutritional advice. Make sure your nutritionist is a Registered Dietitian.

I am a 3 year student of bachelor degree in nutritional medicine. My title after graduating will be nutritionist. I have completed units in chemistry, biochemistry, nutritional biochemistry, human biology, pharmacology ect.
The majority of nutritionists are well educated professionals.

    Beatrice,
There large numbers of individuals calling themselves nutritionists these days (just look at the web) who don’t have any education yet offer themselves up to the public as diet and nutritional professionals. While as you note, there are many who are educated - how educated, in what, and what type of experience do they get - will they get the same hospital internships and experience given to most dietitians? If nutritionist have equal background expereineces and education why not also seek the RD or LD credential? That’s what’s recognized so why wouldn’t you take the RD exam if you truly have the education? Is it possible your training lacks something that RDs and LD’s (licensed dietitians) obtain?
