Race Recap: 37th Annual Dallas White Rock Marathon

The cold and rain did nothing to stop the determination of the 10,317 runners at the 37th annual Dallas White Rock Marathon; a race that led to two new marathon records.
Kenyan Moses Kororia finished the race in 2:12:04; breaking Jeff Lodwick’s 24 year record of 2:12:18. Kororia was also able to overtake Russia’s Svetlana Ponomarenko a few yards before the 24th mile to win an additional $25,000.
As for Ponomarenko, she ran hard and was able to finish strong with a time of 2:29:55, breaking both her own personal record of 2:30:03 and setting a new woman’s record. The old record, 2:30:03, was set last year by Lioudmila Kortchaguina.
“I think the runners had a really good race despite the rain,” said race director Marcus Grunewald. “It was a mega-event. There are always a few mistakes. We’ll start working on how to fix those. It wouldn’t be fun if we didn’t have anything to improve.”
Several former Olympians were also on hand for the weekend. Joan Benoit Samuelson, the 1984 women’s marathon gold medalist participated in the half-marathon; finishing 13th among women. Jeff Galloway, famed coach, author and 1972 U.S. Olympian in the 10,000 meters, received the Victory Award for Excellence. The award is given each year by Wellstone’s Dallas White Rock Marathon to someone who has had a positive effect on the sport and community of running.
