Last Sunday morning at 6am about 16,000 runners joined in a marathon that was just as flashy as the city it was held in: Las Vegas.
The Las Vegas Marathon began with fireworks at the Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino and included 28 couples who were either getting married or renewing their vows at a wedding chapel at mile 5.5.
And what marathon on Vegas would be complete without Elvis? Seventy-five “Running Elvi,” or Elvis Presley impersonators were among the competitors who faced high wind conditions to complete the race.
However, the real drama occurred when Kenyan competitor Joseph Kahugu passed Noah Talam, also Kenyan during the 14th mile mark, taking control of the men’s race and then overtaking female lead Jemima Jelagat in the last half-mile to win the male-female challenge prize. Kahugu won with an unofficial time of 2:16:43.
This race marks her marathon debut with a time of 2:35:25. She reflected on the race and also complained about the wind:
The first half was easy, but the second half was harder for me. The wind was holding me back . . . It was very difficult. The wind was blowing hard. And I knew the men were coming.
