Believe it or not, there were actually celebrity athletes other than Lance Armstrong who competed in the 2006 ING New York City Marathon.
The amateur runners in this year’s race who have competed professionally in other sport included: the 7-time Olympic medal winning gymnast, and Ed Viesturs, one of the world’s premier high-altitude mountain climbers.
It seems as if Miller listened to the advice she was given by our Editor-in-Chief, as she successfully completed the marathon in 4:17:33.
Don’t worry Shannon, we won’t hold it against you that your time was a few minutes slower than the 4:12:06 ran by your former teammate, Kerri Strug, at the 1999 Houston Marathon.
Viesturs, 47, also completed all 26.2 miles and did it in a time of 3:15:18; fastest enough for someone in his age group to qualify for the Boston marathon.
Here’s how Miller, Viesturs and Armstrong’s times compare to other celebrities who have successfully completed a marathon:
- 2:59:37 - Lance Armstrong, cyclist
3:30:18 - John Edwards, former Senator
3:31:00 - Michael Dukakis, former governor
3:44:52 - President George W. Bush
3:45:35 - Kristin Armstrong, ex-wife of Lance Armstrong
3:52:00 - Kim Alexis, supermodel
3:54:00 - Roger Craig, football player
3:54:40 - Justin Leonard, golfer
3:55:40 - Anthony Edwards, actor
3:56:12 - Will Ferrel, actor/comedian
4:12:06 - Kerri Strug, Olympic gymnast
4:14:54 - Sean (Diddy) Combs, rapper
4:29:20 - Oprah Winfrey, talk-show host
4:54:36 - Bill Frist, former Senate majority-leader
4:58:25 - Al Gore, former Vice-President
6:04:43 - David Lee Roth, rock musician

The Final Sprint
I understand that Natalie Morales of NBC ran in the marathon as did former supermodel Kim Alexis. Did either finish? If both who had the better time? Thanks. John C.
November 6th, 2006 at 4:52 pmYes, both Natalie Morales and Kim Alexis finished the race.
Morales (3:31:02) actually beat out Alexis by over an hour. Alexis finished in a time of 4:39:04
Thanks for your comment!
