What if you could follow in the footsteps of the ancient Athenian messenger Phidippides in Greece? Want to get back in touch with nature and spend your days trekking around beautiful Lake Tahoe? Thanks to world-famous coach and former Olympian Jeff Galloway, you can.
Galloway is also a columnist for Runner’s World magazine, the author of top-selling running books and arguable one of the most influential running enthusiasts and speakers in the world. He is the proprietor of Gallowalking and his RUN-WALK method, which encourages non-runners and beginner runners alike to challenge themselves and realize their potential.
Not a natural-born runner himself, Galloway seems to truly understand the frustration of beginner runners, and has set out to spread the glory and passion of running that he feels. His method has helped thousands of people around the world improve and succeed with running and fitness.
Galloway also created and runs retreats that are generally about a week in duration. These trips marry nature with sport in an effort to invigorate fellow runners and educate them along the way. The 2006 retreats are in Blue Mountain, Florida; Lake Tahoe; and Athens, Greece. These trips vary in price, length and intensity; but universally seem like a dream-come-true for anyone who loves running.
Here’s a look at each of the retreats:
Blue Mountain: a more informal retreat than the others mentioned below, Blue Mountain will be from Dec 1-3, 2006, and features a schedule which includes daily optional morning runs, and clinics with Jeff on topics as such as: motivation, fat-burning, training for a specific goal, increasing speed, etc. The price of the retreat is $299 and does not include lodging.
Lake Tahoe: A step up from Blue Mountain, if you will; Lake Tahoe features Galloway along with a team of experts: Joe Henderson (Marathon and Beyond), Bob Anderson (Stretching), Dr. Gary Moran (Physiology and Strength Training) and Dr. David Hannaford (podiatrist). The camp includes lodging and almost all meals; along with chances for swimming, hiking, shopping, and sightseeing. This retreat offers a weekend single option from Friday to Sunday; $610 for first years, $585 for alumni, and a double option $460 for first-timers, $435 for alumni. The week-long prices are for singles $1725 for first-timers, $1675 for alumni, and for doubles $1175 for first-timers, $1125 for alumni. The trip is pricier than the Blue Mountain retreat, but includes an increased amount of activities and opportunities for campers to learn and experience.
Athens, Greece: Clearly above and beyond both the Blue Mountain and Lake Tahoe retreats: the Athens Retreat is 11-day, jam-packed experience that allows participants to both run the Athens marathon and also vacation in what our Editor-in-Chief calls “The most beautiful place to visit in the world”. For $2,395 plus airfare, each camper enjoys lodging, in-hotel meals, and daily opportunities to experience different sights and events in Greece; not to mention a chance to participate in the Athens Marathon, which covers the same course as hat has been reported to be the very first marathon in history. The program does offer a shorter 6 day 5 night option, and an independent option, but I think if I am going to go to Greece at all, I’m gonna do the real deal and run it with Jeff!
All said, Galloway has become part of of an empire of passion-boosting and inspirational running programs; continuing to spread the idea that who wants it bad enough can successfully complete a marathon. I encourage you to check out these retreats; I promise just reading about them will get you just as excited as I have (and probably leave you wondering why you ever chose a different vacation option, haha).
