The Stanford women managed to hold onto their lead and season-long number ranking at the championship meet held Monday November 20, in Terre Haute, Indiana; winning their second consecutive NCAA title. Lead by coach Peter Tegen, who in his second year with the team, was named the “Peter Tegen Coach of the Year,” an award now named in his honor. Tegan said:
I’m thrilled that the women could take the temperature for the second time,” said Tegen. “It’s more difficult to repeat than to win the championship in the first place, and it wasn’t easy for us today.
The women of Colorado and Michigan finished second and third place, respectively. Colorado entered the race ranked 6th and placed higher than previously expected. Wisconsin and Arkansas rounded out the top five.
On the men’s side, the Colorado team managed to win their third national championship in the last decade; pulling a huge upset over previously #1 ranked Wisconsin. Ranked second going into Monday’s race, coach Mark Wetmore believed his team won through their perseverance. The coach stated:
We were never rated number one (this season), but it didn’t stop us from trying to win it.
Win it they did, pulling ahead by 48 points to defeat defending champion Wisconsin (who finished a disappointing second). Iona, Stanford and Oregon rounded out the men’s top five.
