Xavier Carter and Jeremy Wariner have both decided to run in the London Grand Prix on July 28, 2006 at the Crystal Palace. Carter, nicknamed the “X-Man”, and Wariner will be joining an incredible field of runners at the race, including Englishman Asafa Powell.
Powell is tied for the 100m world-record with Justin Gatlin. Unfortunately a leg injury forced Gatlin to pull out of the much-anticapted 100m race versus Powell and has sidelined him until August. The London Grand Prix meet would have been the first race between Gatlin and Powell in a year.
Gatlin equaled the Jamaican’s world record time of 9.77 seconds at the Qatar Grand Prix in May. Powell tied the mark again in Gateshead, England, on June 4th.
Americans Carter and Wariner have had unbelievable performances the past two weeks; rising them to the level of international stardom.
Carter moved to second on the world record list with a 19.63 in the 200m at Lausanne. Only Olympic legend Michael Johnson has ever run the 200m in a better time. In the 200m in London, Carter will be up against Wallace Spearmon, the World silver medallist, in addition to Britain’s best 200m runner Marlon Devonish.
Wariner became fourth on the all-time 400m list after running the event in an amazing 43.62 seconds at the IAAF Golden League meeting in Rome, Italy this past Friday. Wariner’s opponents in the 400m in London include Tim Benjamin of Britain. Benjamin, coming back from injury, also had a win at the Trials.
On the woman’s side, there is also a star-studded lineup for the 100m. World champion Lauryn Williams will be up against up the 200m world champion Allyson Felix and the 2003 100m world champion Torri Edwards.
